Mindsets. This word is incredibly loaded and complex to explain, so is the human brain. As far as our daily processing of information and behavioral decisions go, we tend to go for the quicker, easier route of selecting from a pre-programmed set of choices, instructions and patterns that we trust to be quick and require the least amount of energy. A mindset is a set of instructions, patterns of issue resolution, problem solving and ways for our brains to operate with the least energy required principle. Mindsets allows us to get through the day and they do differ in complexity; when you analyze them in pairs as this article will do, you will find that there is good and bad, there is simple and complex, there is different levels of energy requirement for utilizing that specific option.
The scarcity mindset is something I have observed in abundance as I was growing up. As the west puts it, developing countries, that is basically the west saying we are developed; there is really not much else we could do to be more awesome and look at these other nations who still have ways to go – and there is some merit to that – have this tendency to assume in between individuals to look at the availability of options, opportunities and resources from within the perspective of scarcity. This creates a struggle between individual citizens in a given country that is not doing well in macro/micro economic terms:leads to increased daily struggle between each and leads to a stressful existence. The frequency of uncomfortable confrontations increases as a result as each person keeps scarcity mindset lighted-up in their heads-up display during a given day. Makes them assholes in traffic, there aren’t enough lanes or road to use, there never is enough business or work to go round, good schools are scarce, nice neighbourhoods to live in are scarce and the like.
This doesn’t necessarily mean a developed nation that doesn’t necessarily experience scarcity during their daily lives is well off. First off in a developed nation, as the productive output is much higher, mindless consumption of resources are much higher compared to a developing nation. In contrast, one could argue that resources are much better aligned to survival level needs and is more efficient at being consumption in a developing nation.
The mindset of abundance is the option that requires more energy more thinking power and a levelled-up human to successfully utilize. Scarcity is creating bottlenecks such that gatekeepers can keep to power and continue to amass that power next to the assets they acquire along the way. This is not to say all wielders of power are evil but most are; for as long as the populus maintains the mindset of scarcity, the economic model that makes them successful continues to help them grow while shrinking lower classes. Every time you are scared to keep at your place, keep your job, keep your house and keep your space and time as it is and not require any more from the people with more, this increases the level of comfort, shuts you don and maintains the economic model.
Abundance mindset will allow you to see that the world with its finite resources is not finite when it comes to sustainably live and prosper on it. The free exchange of education – not ideas – allows for the proliferation of processed, refined knowledge to become accessible to more people. If anything, we as a species need to invest more in educational technology, connected and freely available institions and networks of teachers who are willing to better others sharing their experience and wisdom – not their ideas, feelings. Ideas and feelings are awesome when shared meaningfully, not when shared at scale. The current state of the internetwork is a tool for comparing yourself with others rather than enlightenment. This approach should change, more easily accessible education will allow for more development for everyone. Thank you for reading.
